World Bicycle Day 2026: Bicycles as a Solution for Sustainable Mobility

World Bicycle Day 2026 is seen as a strategic turning point for policymakers to advocate for cycling as a viable alternative transport mode. In addition to its eco-friendly nature, the bicycle offers a multifaceted remedy for urban woes, including pollution, energy insecurity, public health concerns, traffic gridlock, and the fiscal strain on the state.

Bike to Work stands as a response to the current energy and economic crises

Bike to Work (B2W) Indonesia Chairperson, Hendro Subroto, remarked that the theme ‘Cycling for a Greener Future’ adopted for World Bicycle Day 2026 encapsulates the commitment to preserving a sustainable environment for posterity.

According to him, the use of bicycles can be seamlessly integrated with public transit; cycling and walking act as essential feeders that bolster the integrated transportation framework.

"Bike to Work stands as a response to the current energy and economic crises. Despite perceptions that such crises no longer exist, the reality is that these challenges persist," he expressed, Wednesday (6/3).

According to him, a culture of cycling reflects an intelligent modern society mindful of ecological sustainability. He believes that those who care for the Earth’s future will not let the practice of cycling fade away.

Further, Hendro warned of the ongoing dependency on fossil fuel exploitation, which fuels both air and noise pollution. Such a situation, he argued, indicates a deficit of courage to innovate toward more eco-friendly transit frameworks.

"Policymakers ought to prioritize sustainable mobility. If electric vehicles are granted various subsidies, cycling—a mode of transport that is intrinsically zero-emission—remains reliant on the goodwill of the community. It would be a significant step forward if companies offered incentives, bonuses, or recognition to staff members who choose to cycle to work,” he continued.

He added that B2W Indonesia continues to advocate for greater stakeholder attention toward cyclists, aiming to foster a growing public inclination toward sustainable transportation.

In observance of World Bicycle Day 2026, B2W Indonesia hosted a communal ride on Wednesday (June 3). The event began at 6 AM at the FX Sudirman Plaza in Central Jakarta and wrapped up by 8 AM. Cyclists followed a circuit around the Senayan district, making use of the available cycling infrastructure.

Several distinguished guests participated in the activity, among whom were Indonesian Olympic Committee President, Raja Sapta Oktohari; Central Jakarta Mayor, Arifin; representatives of the South Jakarta City administration; Jakarta Transportation Agency Head, Budi Awaluddin; Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) Jakarta Chairman, Yusa Cahya Permana; and representatives from the Ministry of Transportation’s Directorate of Road Transport Facilities and Safety.
